photo | Kissing the Ceiling

with one comment

Fred Muram’s “Kissing the Ceiling” series is mundane, unsophisticated and simple yet light-heartening (I just made that word up) and grin-bringforth-ing (again, made-up). If anyone wants to try it, I’ll take pictures for ya.

photographer | Li Wei

with 2 comments

Some of Li Wei’s work is quite eery, yet charming in a playful and cartoonistic way. It appears that he can fly, and sometimes shove himself in practically any surface (just like how arrows nail their targets). Or detach his head and let it float around. He’s one of the few photographic installation artists out there that actually impressed me with creativity.

A truly big night

without comments

Tonight is one of those nights that I will never forget. Never forget that along with me every single one around me saw the change happening. The change that have already inspired millions and possibly billions of people around the globe. May everyone’s heart all around the world be filled with hope, energy and inspiration hereafter when they join me in congratulating Obama’s victory of the presidential election ‘08. I’m not a citizen to this country and thus was not able to vote, but no matter what the paper says, I have somehow convinced myself that it is good for the whole world that he will be leading the U.S. for the next four (or eight) years. And I will let our history tell the rest.

5th year reunion @ St. George’s

without comments

I finally got to the pictures I took while I was sober and taking a break from mingling with all my high school buddies at our 5th year reunion. I wanted to capture the beautiful campus of St. George’s. I don’t know if it really turned out the way I wanted to be, but it’s my personal best attempt so far. (Jump to my photo site, look under “2008/SG”)

Tour de Cupcakes (sans cupcakes)

with 2 comments

Well, to be truly accurate, “sans free cupcakes as advertised”. So on Sunday my and my bike buddies (who seem to be cherishing the idea of forming a bike pack and bike around the town) participated in Tour de Cupcakes, hosted by Bike Kitchen. It was a fundraiser event for financing their moving to a better location than the sxxxhole they’re currently located in. Everyone was supposed to get all-you-can-eat cupcakes at each checkpoint. Well, that didn’t exactly work out because hundreds of people ended up showing and they were only prepared for 50 or so. And we weren’t exactly in the shape for beating the crowd so that we can get a hold of those cupcakes. Oh well, overall we still had a good time, it was a fun event to be a part of, and we got to bike around the town.

As an added bonus, my buddy Tony and I put on some Party Rangers masks to spice things up. We certainly drew attention, and a group of students who were documenting the event came up to us and asked for an interview. (Tony, I thought I was done being ridiculous in college. I blame it on you.)

Bike Kitchen has a unique operation well-known to the locals: you go to the shop, volunteer, rack up time, and use them up later in exchange of parts and stuff. Supposedly a great community building joint, plus you get to learn how to repair bikes hands-on. One of these days I’m gonna check it out and learn more about bikes.

public message | Japan’s subway “No-No”s

with one comment

These images found on the Japanese subway are pretty funny. Stuff you really shouldn’t be doing in a tight, close-quarter public spaces wherever you go. (But the image above took me a while to understand why you should be doing such a pose only at seas.)

History | A girl from Hiroshima

without comments

The series of illustrations and narratives of Tomiko Konishi tells her own story of the day Hiroshima was shaken in terror in 1945. This could potentially be the most gloomy post I’ve made on here, but I just wanted to share with people how devastating wars and conflicts can be to ordinary people.

This is a part of MIT’s Visualizing Cultures series, a web-based historical narrative to reconstruct the past stories with images.

wine | JAQK

with one comment

Just found out about this new wine company, JAQK, and even though (obviously) I have no idea how their wine is going to taste, I really like the bottle design. (I’m guessing their wine is going to taste very bold, young and fruity. Californian + catering to hip, younger crowd.)

Ryan’s Adobe video training

without comments

Me friend Ryan is up to the point where he can represent his company and his technology on the web: he took part in one of the many video training lessons for Adobe’s Flex technology. I know that small web presence sometimes doesn’t mean much, but it’s kinda cool to see one of your friends make himself readily available and become a face to something.

… I wonder if I’ll ever get to go somewhere and talk about iPods. (Probably never.)

Disclaimer: the links are going to turn out to be covering quite a boring subject for some of you.

jazz | Esperanza Spalding

without comments

A bunch of us went to Yoshi’s SF, an upscale jazz club, last night to check out Esperanza Spalding’s performance. Esperanza is a 23 year-old comet, one of the youngest professors ever for Berklee School of Music, and plays with world-renowned musicians. On atop of that, she can sing awesomely. The outing was a grrrreat susssesss, and I think most of my friends liked her. A cute chick who can play bass and sing? How can you resist?
